About Yanagicha

Yanagicha, also known as "Willow Leaf Tea", is a remarkable tea variety that is characterized above all by its mild character and its gentle, refreshing note. The name Yanagicha is derived from the specific shape of the tea leaves, which are reminiscent of the curved leaves of a willow, i.e. a "Yanagi". However, this characteristic external shape is not all that distinguishes Yanagicha. Behind the shape lies a wealth of aromas that make every cup an experience.

Yanagicha is made from the same tea plant, Camellia sinensis, as the better-known Sencha. However, the production process differs in a number of key ways, resulting in the unique characteristics of Yanagicha. The leaves of this tea are first steamed to stop oxidation, similar to Sencha. But then comes a special feature: the leaves are not rolled, but carefully dried and loosened. This gives them their characteristic, narrow leaf structure.

In terms of taste, Yanagicha offers a mild, harmonious experience that is characterized by a subtle sweetness and a soft freshness. The flavors are less grassy than many other green teas, making it an ideal choice for those who appreciate a gentler taste. The infusion is clear, yellowish in color and impresses with its lightness. There are nuances of delicate vegetables and a subtle floral note reminiscent of spring blossoms.

The health benefits of Yanagicha should also not go unmentioned. Like many green teas, it contains a wealth of antioxidants, including polyphenols and catechins, which have a positive effect on the immune system and help the body to fight free radicals. In addition, Yanagicha is known for its low caffeine content, making it a gentle companion for the later part of the day too.

The preparation of Yanagicha is a particularly mindful act. A water temperature of around 70 to 75 degrees Celsius is recommended to allow its aromas to fully develop. A brewing time of around two minutes allows the tea to develop its full flavor without losing its mild sweetness. Multiple infusions are possible and reveal new facets of the tea with each brew.

Yanagicha, with its elegant balance between restraint and nuance, is a tea that has a special place in Japanese tea culture. For the cultivated tea drinker, it reveals subtle beauty and the tranquillity of a form perfected in nature. Its sophistication appeals to all those who question the everyday and seek something special in the simple.
