Gen Chou Uji Matcha - A jewel of tea cultivation from Uji
The matcha from the 2024 harvest is already completely sold out. We are looking forward to receiving the next harvest in the last week of November 2025. Use our reminder function now to be the first to be informed as soon as the matcha is available again.
The Gen Chou Uji Matcha combines exquisite taste, exceptional purity and an exclusive harvest in a unique way. This matcha variety, which is considered one of Japan's finest, comes from the renowned tea gardens of Uji, a region that is revered far beyond the country's borders as the cradle of "true tea" in tea culture. Cultivation is 100% traditional and completely free of agricultural chemicals. Careful hand-picking of the tea leaves guarantees that only the finest leaves are used.
This year, we were able to secure a few precious 30-gram tins from the limited production of a few kilograms of Gen Chou Uji Matcha thanks to long-standing, trusting relationships. The harvest began at the end of April, and the time-consuming processing in the manufactory takes months to meet the high quality standards.
Origin and tradition
The Nakanishi family, which has been growing organic tea in Uji since 1980, uses a unique method: an elaborate net spans the tea bushes and allows them to thrive perfectly under controlled conditions. Once a year, around 30 harvesters come together to pick the leaves exclusively by hand. They are carefully processed into tencha before being gently ground in traditional stone mills.
Taste experience
The Gen Chou Uji Matcha has an intense, bright green color and pampers the palate with a fruity note, almost free of astringency. The soft, almost sweet finish is particularly impressive in comparison to Takeno Jôô Uji Matcha, which offers slightly more umami and a stronger sweetness.
Availability and content
Like a precious jewel, the production quantity of certified organic matcha is again limited to a few kilograms this year. One tin contains 30 grams of the finest Gen Chou Uji Matcha. Due to its rarity, it is particularly recommended for special occasions.
Perfect preparation
For the perfect tea experience, we recommend 1-2 grams per 120 ml of water at a temperature of up to 80 °C, but ideally at 65 °C. Let this masterpiece of tea art take you into the world of Japanese tea enjoyment
